The Ukraine- EU Marriage Proposal (Cold Feet)

Well, the church is rented, the decorations have been placed, the bells are all ready to ring out the good news of a social, political, and economic union between the Ukraine and the European Union. At nearly the last moment before the wedding, the bride's family (the Prime Minister of Ukraine) wanted a larger dowry and got cold feet. The wedding has been postponed. The bride's family and well wishers are rioting in the streets! Their is wedding cake being thrown all over town. Meanwhile, the bride's father is out of town in hiding.

This reminds me of Marie Antoinette who said, 'Qu'ils mangent de la brioche' - "Let them eat cake!"
Unfortunately, the Prime Minister of the Ukraine did not say, "It is quite certain that in seeing the people who treat us so well despite their own misfortune, we are more obliged than ever to work hard for their happiness". If he really felt this way, he would have signed the EU Agreements yesterday.

The problem, as I see it, was one of poor diplomacy on both sides. The PM of the Ukraine cannot expect to join an "up and coming 'true democracy' in its formation period" while holding a political prisoner hostage- the former Prime Minister to be exact. In essence, by refusing to open his arms and welcome democracy to the European Union he is holding the 420 million citizens of Ukraine hostage as well.

To the PM of Ukraine- let your people go! Release the prisoner! Welcome your new friends and neighbors in the European Union in the next two weeks and you will go down in history as one of the saviours of Ukraine. If you keep holding your citizens hostage however, you will go down in history as a tyrant instead.
Villain or Good guy, there are only two choices in any decision.

I ask you to ponder how you wish to be seen by the world and the citizens of your own country. NATO will protect you from the bear. Have no fear, a little umbrage now will go a long way in the future. The Ukraine will one day join the European Union, with or without you sir. The decision of how you will be judged is up to you.

Democracy is at hand, please do not hold it hostage one moment more.

Happy Holidays to my friends in the European Union!
